OVERVIEW

About this course.

A clay brick is made by winning and preparing clay, forming it into the shape of a brick, drying that "green" brick to remove most of its water, and then firing it in a kiln at high temperature so that it becomes a hard, stable ceramic. That four-part sequence — raw material, forming, drying, firing — is the heart of brickmaking, and although modern plants are highly mechanised and controlled, the underlying process is the same one used, in principle, for thousands of years. Understanding it in outline is worth the effort, because almost every benefit a brick delivers can be traced back to one of these stages.

The process begins with the raw material. Bricks are made from clay and shale, natural materials won from the ground, usually from quarries near the brickworks because moving heavy raw material long distances is uneconomic. Different clays contain different minerals and iron compounds, and these differences are what give fired bricks their range of natural colours — reds, browns, buffs, and darker tones — without the need for paint. Once won, the raw material is prepared: it is crushed, ground and screened to a consistent particle size, blended to achieve a uniform mix, and brought to the right moisture content. This preparation matters because consistency in the raw material feeds through to consistency in the finished brick, and inconsistent material produces bricks that vary in size, colour and strength.
