OVERVIEW

About this course.

Applying life-cycle thinking to construction materials means weighing a material's environmental impact across the whole of its life — from the moment raw materials are extracted, through manufacture, transport, construction, the years of use and maintenance, and finally to what happens at the end of its life — instead of judging it on the price on the invoice or a single appealing feature. It is a way of seeing a material not as a static product delivered to site, but as the visible middle of a long chain of activity, most of which happens somewhere else and much of which happens before or after the material is on the building. For practitioners who select or influence materials, it is the foundational habit on which every other idea in this course depends.

The reason this matters is that impact is unevenly distributed along that chain, so where you choose to look changes what you see. If you look only at purchase price, you capture a commercial signal that may bear little relationship to environmental cost. If you look only at one attribute — that a product is "recycled", or "natural", or "low-VOC" — you may be right about that attribute and still miss a larger impact elsewhere in the material's life. Life-cycle thinking is a discipline of deliberately widening the view so that the whole picture, not a flattering fragment of it, informs the decision.
