OVERVIEW

About this course.

A smart home is one in which connected devices, sensors and controls allow everyday functions to be automated, scheduled or managed remotely, so the home can respond to its occupants and conditions rather than being operated entirely by manual switches. The problems home automation actually solves fall into four practical groups: comfort and convenience, energy management, security and safety, and accessibility and ageing in place. The value of a smart home lies not in the gadgets themselves but in how well they address these real needs; technology added without a problem to solve tends to become an unused novelty.

Comfort and convenience are the most familiar benefits. Automated or scheduled lighting, heating and cooling, blinds and hot water can keep a home at a comfortable temperature and light level with little daily effort — for example, cooling starting before occupants arrive home on a hot afternoon, or lights and blinds adjusting to the time of day. Remote control from a phone or voice assistant lets occupants operate the home from bed, from another room or from away. Convenience is genuine, but it is the shallowest layer of value, and a good designer looks beyond it to the more substantial problems below.
