Digital construction is the use of shared digital models, data and connected tools to design, deliver and operate buildings and infrastructure, in place of relying on paper drawings and disconnected documents. Rather than a single technology, it is a way of working in which information about a project is created once, structured well, and reused by everyone who needs it — designers, engineers, builders, subcontractors, clients and, later, the people who operate the finished asset. It is growing because construction has historically been slow to digitise, because projects have become more complex, and because clients, governments and the industry increasingly expect better coordination, fewer errors, and reliable information that lasts beyond handover. This module explains what digital construction is and the forces behind its growth.
At its heart, digital construction is about treating information as a first-class part of the project, not an afterthought. In a traditional workflow, information is fragmented: architects produce drawings, engineers produce separate drawings and calculations, the builder marks up further versions, and suppliers and subcontractors work from whatever they are handed. Each party recreates or reinterprets information the others already hold, and inconsistencies between documents are common and costly. Digital construction replaces this with the idea of a shared, structured, digital source of truth — most visibly a Building Information Model, but more broadly a well-organised body of project data — that different parties contribute to and draw from, so that everyone is working from consistent, current information.
