OVERVIEW

About this course.

Construction dust is a serious health hazard because much of it is fine enough to be breathed deep into the lungs, and some of it — especially silica, asbestos and certain wood dusts — can cause serious, sometimes fatal lung diseases that develop slowly over many years. Critically, the most dangerous particles are often the ones you cannot see, and because the diseases develop long after the exposure, by the time symptoms appear, permanent damage may already have been done. That combination — invisible, everyday and slow-acting — is exactly what makes dust so easy to underestimate and so important to control.

To understand the hazard, it helps to know a little about dust and about the lung. When you cut, grind, drill, sand, jackhammer, demolish or even sweep up, you break material into particles of many sizes. The larger particles — the visible haze and the grit you can feel — are a nuisance and an irritant, but the body's natural defences in the nose and upper airways trap most of them. The real danger lies in the fraction that is too fine to see: the respirable particles, small enough to bypass those defences and travel right down into the deepest part of the lung, the tiny air sacs where oxygen passes into the blood. There they can lodge and cause damage that the body cannot clear. This is why a common and dangerous myth — "if I can't see much dust, it must be safe" — is so wrong. A cloud that looks like it has settled can still be full of the finest, most harmful particles hanging invisibly in the air.
