This course gives construction supervisors, leading hands, employers and workers a practical, plain-English guide to communicating well on site. It treats communication not as a soft skill separate from "real" work, but as the core mechanism through which safe work actually gets organised and productive work actually gets done. It works through the four broad channels available on site — face-to-face and verbal, written, visual (signage, drawings and demonstration), and digital — and when each one is the right choice. It examines the barriers that are peculiar to construction: noise and distance, language and literacy differences including workers with English as an additional language, hierarchy and the reluctance to speak up, and the assumptions and jargon that quietly derail messages. It then develops the two core skills a site leader relies on most — giving clear instructions and checking they are understood, and active listening — and shows how these skills underpin WHS consultation, site inductions, safe work method statements (SWMS) and toolbox talks. Finally it turns to the difficult end of communication: constructive difficult conversations, managing conflict, and giving and receiving feedback.
The course keeps its legal statements general. It refers to duties by their subject matter rather than by citing section or clause numbers, and it points you to the primary sources you should read yourself. Because Australia's WHS laws are a national model adopted separately by each state and territory — and because Victoria runs a different Act altogether — the course repeatedly reminds you to check the rules that apply where you work.
