Paints and coatings have environmental and health impacts because they are chemical products that are manufactured from raw materials, applied wet and then cure by releasing substances into the air, protect surfaces for a period and then need renewing, and eventually become waste along with their containers — so their impacts arise across their whole life, not just when they are being brushed on. Recognising this life-cycle picture is the foundation for using them responsibly: the goal is not to stop using paints, which perform valuable protective and functional roles, but to choose and use them in ways that reduce harm to the people applying and living with them and to the environment. A coating that protects a building well and lasts a long time can be a net environmental good; a poorly chosen or carelessly used one can cause avoidable harm.
Manufacture and raw materials. Paints are made from several components: binders (the resins that form the film and bind everything together), pigments (for colour and opacity), solvents or water (the carrier that keeps the paint liquid for application and then leaves), and additives (for properties like flow, drying, mould resistance and durability). Producing these materials uses energy and resources and can have environmental impacts in extraction, manufacture and transport. The type of paint matters: solvent-based ("oil-based") paints use organic solvents as the carrier, while water-based ("acrylic" or latex) paints use water. This difference is central to the health and environmental profile, because it largely determines how much volatile organic compound (VOC) the paint contains and releases.
