Exit and emergency lighting is a category of building safety equipment designed to keep the paths that lead out of a building visible and clearly marked when the normal lighting supply fails. In an ordinary emergency — a fire, a smoke event, a mains power failure or a fault that trips the building's supply — the lights people rely on every day may go out at the exact moment they most need to move quickly and safely toward an exit. Exit and emergency lighting exists to bridge that gap: it activates automatically when normal power is lost and provides enough illumination, and enough directional information, for occupants to evacuate.

It is best understood as a life-safety system rather than a convenience. A life-safety system is one whose failure can directly contribute to death or serious injury, and which is therefore engineered to function precisely in the abnormal conditions that other systems are not built for. Consider the sequence of events in a typical emergency. An alarm sounds, or occupants see or smell smoke. The building may lose power, either because the emergency itself has damaged the supply or because the supply has been deliberately isolated. People who know the building well in daylight suddenly face a darkened, possibly smoke-filled environment. Familiar corridors become disorienting. Without a reliable, automatic source of light on the escape route and clear signs marking the exits, the risk of people becoming lost, falling on stairs, crowding at the wrong doors, or failing to find an exit rises sharply.
