Natural timber needs protection and finishing because it is a natural, organic and hygroscopic material — it takes up and gives off moisture with the surrounding air, it is degraded by sunlight, and it can be attacked by fungi and insects — so left bare and exposed it changes colour, moves, cracks and can eventually decay, whereas a suitable finish slows these processes, keeps the timber looking as intended, and extends its useful life. The short answer is that finishing is not merely cosmetic: it manages moisture movement, shields against UV, resists soiling and wear, and can help defend against decay, so it is central to both the appearance and the durability of timber in service. This module sets out why timber behaves as it does and what finishing is trying to achieve, framing the more detailed enemies and options that follow.
Timber is a natural, variable material. Unlike a manufactured, homogeneous material, timber is grown, so it varies between species, between boards and even along a single board — in grain, density, colour, natural durability and how it moves. Some species are naturally durable and some are not; some are pale and some richly coloured; some are stable and some move a lot. This variability is part of timber's appeal, but it means finishing has to work with the material rather than against it, and that the "right" finish depends on the species, the timber's natural durability, where it is used and what it must endure. Understanding that timber is a living-derived, variable material is the starting point for treating it well.
