OVERVIEW

About this course.

What this course covers

This course builds practical, non-clinical awareness of how alcohol and other drugs affect safety in the building and construction workplace, and how a business can respond fairly and lawfully. It explains why AOD is a genuine work health and safety matter rather than only a private lifestyle choice; the concept of "fitness for work" and the reality that impairment can come from alcohol, illicit drugs, certain prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and fatigue; the broad WHS duty framing, under which a PCBU must manage risks to health and safety so far as is reasonably practicable and each worker must take reasonable care not to adversely affect the health and safety of others; how a fair, clearly communicated AOD policy — developed through genuine consultation and paired with education and support or rehabilitation pathways — outperforms punishment alone; why workplace testing is a sensitive and contested area shaped by an organisation's own policy and its industrial and privacy context, and must be approached carefully, lawfully and consultatively; and the value of supporting a worker to seek help.
