Managing Mobile Plant on Construction Sites

About this course.

What this course covers. This course builds a practical understanding of mobile plant risk for the people who share a construction site with machines every day. It defines "plant" and "mobile plant" in construction terms and gives common examples. It sets out the main mechanisms of harm — pedestrians being struck or crushed, rollover and tip-over, being struck by moving or falling loads, contact with overhead and underground services, and incidents during loading and unloading. It then works through how the risk is managed: separating people from plant through traffic management planning, exclusion zones, physical barriers and designated pedestrian routes; using spotters, communication protocols and visibility aids where separation alone is not enough; keeping the machine itself safe through rollover protective structures, seatbelts, pre-start inspections and maintenance; and ensuring operators hold the competency or licence required for the plant they use, including that some plant requires a high risk work licence. It closes with the underlying WHS duties, consultation and safe systems of work.

Who it is for. Site supervisors, leading hands, plant operators, trades and general construction workers, traffic controllers, and health and safety representatives who plan, direct, operate or work near mobile plant and record CPD against their own obligations. It is an awareness and refresher resource. It is not operator training and it does not assess or certify anyone's competency to operate plant.
