OVERVIEW

About this course.

Micaceous iron oxide, or MIO, is a form of iron oxide whose particles are shaped like thin, flat plates or flakes rather than rounded grains, and it is used as a pigment in protective coatings. Because the particles are lamellar — plate-like, resembling the flat cleavage of mica, from which the name derives — they tend to lie down flat and overlap one another as the wet coating dries, stacking roughly parallel to the surface like tiles or leaves. This overlapping arrangement builds a dense, layered structure inside the dry film. MIO is valued in protective coatings for steel chiefly because that structure creates a barrier that lengthens the path corrosive agents must travel to reach the metal, and because it reinforces the film.

To understand why the shape matters, it helps to contrast MIO with ordinary spherical or blocky pigment particles. A pigment made of roughly round grains sits in the binder as a collection of separate particles with binder filling the spaces between them. Moisture and oxygen migrating through the film can move around such particles relatively directly. Lamellar particles behave differently. When flat plates settle and align parallel to the substrate, they overlap in many thin layers through the thickness of the film. Anything trying to pass through the film from the surface to the steel cannot travel in a straight line; it must detour around plate after plate, following a long, tortuous route. This "tortuous path" is the central idea behind MIO's barrier effect, and it is explored further in Module 2.
