"Neurodiversity" refers to the natural variation in how human brains work — the different ways people think, learn, concentrate, remember, communicate and process information and their surroundings. The idea is that these differences are a normal part of human diversity rather than defects to be corrected, in the same way that people vary in personality, height or handedness. A person whose thinking differs from what is considered typical is often described as "neurodivergent"; commonly discussed examples include autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and dyspraxia. This module explains these terms respectfully and in everyday language only. It is non-clinical awareness education and does not diagnose, label or provide medical advice.
The starting point is that there is no single "correct" or "normal" type of brain. Just as any workplace contains people with different strengths, working styles and preferences, it contains people whose brains process information in different ways. The term neurodiversity describes this variation across a whole population or group. When people talk about an individual being neurodivergent, they mean that person's way of thinking or processing differs in some notable way from what is most common, which is sometimes described as neurotypical. These are broad, everyday descriptions rather than clinical categories, and it is important to use them respectfully. Many people describe themselves using these words, and language preferences differ from person to person, so the respectful approach is to follow the language an individual uses about themselves rather than imposing terms on them.
