Reading and Interpreting Construction Plans and Specifications

About this course.

This course builds the everyday skill of reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications. It starts with why the skill matters — how accurate reading prevents costly errors, rework and disputes, and how the habit of asking rather than guessing protects both quality and relationships on site. It then explains the main documents found on a typical project: architectural drawings, structural drawings, services and engineering drawings, the written specification, and the various schedules — and how these documents are meant to work together as one coordinated set rather than as separate pieces. It explains what generally takes precedence when documents disagree, and why raising a request for information (an RFI) is almost always safer than assuming.

The course then teaches the mechanics of reading a drawing: title blocks and revision status, scale and how to measure from a drawing correctly (and why you should never scale a drawing when a figured dimension is available), dimensions, levels and datums, grid lines and set-out, and the common symbols, abbreviations and line types. It notes that Australia has a published Standard covering technical drawing conventions, which you should obtain and read, and it works through the common drawing types — site and set-out plans, floor plans, elevations, sections and details — explaining what each is best at telling you. It shows how the specification complements the drawings by defining materials, products and standards of workmanship, and how the whole documentation set relates to the approved design and to demonstrating compliance with the National Construction Code, whose framework is produced by the Australian Building Codes Board. Finally, it drives home the discipline of always working to the latest revision and recording changes.
