OVERVIEW

About this course.

Engineers inspect construction work to verify with their own eyes that what has been built matches what was designed, drawn, specified and approved, and to find problems early — when they can still be corrected cheaply and safely — rather than after they are buried, covered or loaded. An inspection converts an assumption ("the work was done correctly") into evidence. That evidence protects the public who will use the structure, the client who is paying for it, the builder whose work is being confirmed, and the engineer whose design and reputation depend on the work being executed as intended. The value of inspection is not fault-finding for its own sake; it is assurance, backed by a record.

The most fundamental purpose is conformance. Drawings and specifications describe an intended outcome — the size and grade of a member, the amount and cover of reinforcement, the compaction of a fill, the fall of a drain, the fixings of a connection, the sequence of a pour. Inspection checks that the physical work reflects those requirements before the next stage makes them impossible to see. Reinforcement is checked before concrete is poured because once the concrete is placed, the steel is invisible and any error is locked in. Waterproofing is checked before it is tiled over; a subgrade is checked before it is paved; a structural connection is checked before it is clad. This "inspect before you cover" logic is the reason inspection timing is so important: the window to verify many things is short, and it closes for good when the following trade arrives.
