OVERVIEW

About this course.

Acoustic comfort matters because unwanted noise directly affects health, wellbeing, sleep, privacy and productivity, and because poor acoustic separation is one of the most common, most bitterly felt and most expensive-to-remedy faults in a finished building — particularly in apartments and attached housing. Sound is energy that travels as tiny, rapid pressure fluctuations through air and as vibration through solid materials. In a building it reaches a listener along several paths at once: through the separating element itself, around it through connected structure, and through any gap or air leak. Understanding these behaviours is the foundation of every acoustic decision that follows in this course.

Start with what sound is. When something vibrates — vocal cords, a speaker cone, a foot striking a floor — it disturbs the surrounding air, creating waves of slightly higher and lower pressure that spread outward and are heard when they reach the ear. The same vibration can also pass directly into solid materials, which often carry it further and more efficiently than air does. Two properties describe any sound. Its frequency, measured in cycles per second, corresponds to pitch: low frequencies are the deep bass of a subwoofer, a truck engine or footfall; high frequencies are the treble of speech consonants, cutlery and birdsong. Its level, expressed in decibels, corresponds to loudness. The decibel scale is logarithmic, which has an important practical consequence: a relatively small change in the decibel figure represents a large change in the underlying sound energy and a clearly audible change in loudness. This is why halving the number of noise complaints is far harder than it sounds — meaningful improvement requires a substantial change in energy, not a marginal one.
