They are serious because they cause real, often permanent harm that is easy to overlook until it is too late. Heat illness can escalate from mild discomfort to a life-threatening emergency in a single shift. Loud noise permanently destroys hearing, and the damage is incurable and cumulative. Vibration causes irreversible nerve, blood-vessel and spinal injuries that can end a trade career. Because the harm is usually gradual or invisible, these hazards are routinely dismissed as "part of the job." The work health and safety framework rejects that view: it requires the business to eliminate or minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable.

The reason these three hazards are underestimated is precisely what makes them dangerous. A fall or a struck-by injury is immediate, visible and obviously serious, so it commands attention. Heat, noise and vibration mostly work slowly. A worker exposed to high noise for years does not feel their hearing being destroyed day by day; they simply notice, eventually, that they cannot follow a conversation in a noisy room or that a constant ringing has settled in their ears. A person using vibrating tools may not connect the numbness and tingling in their fingers to the work until the damage is established and permanent. Even heat, which can act quickly, is often endured as toughness rather than treated as a hazard, until someone collapses. The delay between exposure and obvious harm breeds complacency, and complacency is the enemy here.
