Quality management in construction means running the job so that the work meets its specified requirements the first time, and so that there is objective evidence to prove it — not merely inspecting the finished product and hoping it passes. It is the coordinated set of activities by which an organisation plans for quality, controls the work as it is done, checks that it conforms, and improves over time. It protects margin because rework, delay, disputes and warranty callbacks are expensive and are largely avoidable, and it protects reputation because clients, certifiers and the market remember who delivers conforming work reliably. In short, quality management is not an overhead added to construction; it is the discipline that keeps construction profitable and trusted.

It helps to be precise about what "quality" means here, because the word is often used loosely. In a quality-management sense, quality is not about luxury or gold-plating; it is about conformance to specified requirements — building what the contract, specification, drawings and applicable Standards actually require, no less and, ordinarily, no more. A modest building built exactly to its specification is a quality outcome; an expensive building that departs from its requirements is not. This distinction matters because it makes quality objective and manageable: instead of arguing about whether something looks good enough, the question becomes whether it meets the defined requirement, which can be inspected, tested and recorded. Managing quality therefore begins with knowing precisely what the requirements are.
